Caring for Your New Sod
Essential Tips from Elite Lawn & Landscape
At Elite Lawn & Landscape, we pride ourselves on delivering top-notch lawn and landscape services in Lexington, South Carolina. One of the most frequent inquiries we receive is about the proper care for newly installed sod. To ensure your new lawn thrives, here are some general guidelines to help you through the critical establishment period. Remember, these tips are intended as general advice, and individual results may vary based on numerous factors.
Initial Watering
As soon as our team lays your new sod, it’s imperative to begin watering immediately, especially in warm weather. Consistent moisture is key during this early stage.
Determining Water Needs
Check Moisture Levels: Gently lift a corner of the sod and feel the soil underneath. The soil should be moist but not soggy, with a slight “give” when you walk on it.
Consistency: Aim to keep the sod as wet as a sponge until the roots start to take hold.
Watering Schedule
Morning Watering: Water your new sod every morning for about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your water pressure.
Afternoon / Evening Watering: You might need to add 15-20 minute watering cycles in the afternoon, especially during hot days. This is crucial for the first 2-3 weeks until the roots are well established.
Footprint Test: Walk on the lawn. You may be overwatering if it feels squishy, leaves footprints, or water seeps out. Adjust accordingly.
Root Establishment
The time it takes for roots to form can vary:
Summer: Expect 3-4 weeks of daily watering.
Winter: Dormant sod may take the entire season to root.
Check the corners of your sod regularly for white roots. As the sod becomes harder to lift, gradually reduce watering over several weeks. Eventually, established lawns will need about 1 inch of water per week for warm-season grasses and up to 2 inches for tall fescue.
Additional Tips
•Heat Impact: Sod near paved areas like driveways and sidewalks will dry out faster. Monitor these spots closely.
•Rainfall: Use a rain gauge to measure actual rainfall and ensure the sod is adequately wet.
•Weather Conditions: On cloudy or cooler days, sod will dry out more slowly. Regularly lift corners to check moisture levels.
•Frequent Checks: Check moisture levels at least twice daily, increasing frequency during hot weather, especially for tall fescue, which may need watering 2-3 times daily.
